Orthopedic surgeon starting salary increases 12% in 2023

The average starting salary for orthopedic surgeons increased 12 percent in 2022 and 2023, according to AMN Healthcare’s “2023 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives” report released July 24.

The data was based on a representative sample of 2,676 physician and advanced practitioner search engagements during the 12-month period of April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023. In 2021 and 2022, the average starting salary for orthopedic surgeons was $565,000. In 2022 and 2023, that number grew to $633,000. 

Orthopedic surgeons saw the fourth highest starting salary increase of all physician specialties, following psychiatrists, dermatologists and anesthesiologists.
