How US News' top 10 orthopedic hospitals earned their top spots

U.S. News & World Report named the 50 "Best Hospitals for Orthopedics" 2023-24 on Aug. 1, but what have the top 10 hospitals done that sets them apart?

The ranking was determined by evaluating 1,681 hospitals and spotlighting the top 50 that see patients with challenging orthopedic conditions for spinal surgeries and fusions, limb, joint and other musculoskeletal care.

Here is a list of U.S. News' top 10 orthopedic hospitals and their stand-out features and accomplishments:

1. Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Score: 100/100

The 2023-24 list marks the 14th consecutive year that Hospital for Special Surgery has been named the No. 1 hospital for orthopedics. The hospital received a perfect performance score for its success in patient survival, volume of high-risk patients, patient experience, nurse staffing and advanced clinical technologies. It is nationally ranked in two adult and one pediatric specialty, and it is rated high performing in all four adult orthopedic procedures and conditions evaluated.

2. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). Score: 85/100

As a member of the Best Hospitals Honor Roll, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties and rated high performing in 21 procedures and conditions, including three in orthopedics. On a regional level, it is ranked as both the No. 1 hospital in Los Angeles and the state of California. The hospital is rated high performing in all procedures and conditions, while providing care to the sickest, most medically complex patients in its specialties. 

3. Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.). Score: 84.3/100

Mayo Clinic is on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll and received five stars in patient experience. The hospital is ranked high performing in 20 procedures and conditions, including three orthopedic procedures, and two adult specialties. It is nationally ranked in 13 adult specialties and eight children's specialties. Its regional rankings include No. 1 hospital in Minnesota for adults and children and No. 9 hospital in the Midwest for children. 

4. NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital (New York City). Score: 81.8/100

NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital is a general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. The hospital is high performing in 3 out of 4 orthopedic procedures measured by the rankings. Regionally, the system's hospitals are ranked as the No. 1 hospital in New York and the New York City metro area and are rated high performing in one adult specialty and 20 procedures and conditions. 

5. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia Irving Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Center (New York City). Score: 80/100

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell is also listed on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. The hospital is nationally ranked in 14 adult and 10 children's specialties, and it is rated high performing in one adult specialty and 20 procedures and conditions, including three orthopedic procedures. Regionally, it is ranked as the No. 2 hospital in New York and the New York City metro area.

6. Stanford (Calif.) Health Care-Stanford Hospital. Score: 78.5/100

Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital is a general medicine and surgical facility and teaching hospital on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. The hospital is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties, and it is rated high performing in one adult specialty and 19 procedures and conditions, including all four orthopedic procedures evaluated. Additionally, it is ranked as the No. 1 hospital in the San Jose metro area and the No. 3 hospital in California.

7. Santa Monica (Calif.) UCLA Medical Center and Orthopedic Hospital. Score: 77.5/100

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopedic Hospital is a general medical and surgical facility that received 4 out of 5 stars in patient experience. The hospital is rated high performing in four procedures and conditions, including three in orthopedics, and it is nationally ranked in one adult specialty.

8. Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). Score: 76.4/100

Rush University Medical Center is on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll and is rated high performing in 17 procedures and conditions, including all four in orthopedics. The hospital is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties, and it is ranked as the No. 2 hospital in Illinois and the Chicago metro area.

9. Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). Score: 75.8/100

Massachusetts General Hospital is on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll and is rated high performing in 21 procedures and conditions, including three in orthopedics. The hospital is nationally ranked in 13 adult specialties and four children's specialties. Additionally, it is regionally ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Massachusetts and the Boston metro area. For its children's hospital, it is ranked as the No. 2 hospital in Massachusetts and the No. 3 hospital in New England. 

10. North Shore University Hospital at Northwell Health (Manhasset, N.Y.). Score: 75.2/100

North Shore University Hospital at Northwell Health is on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll and is rated high performing in 15 procedures and conditions. Nationally, the general medical and surgical facility is ranked in nine adult specialties.
