Brett Auerbach, DO, an orthopedic surgeon at Guthrie Medical Group in Sayre, Pa., connected with Becker's to discuss how he anticipates ChatGPT and other AI programs will evolve in healthcare.

Ask Orthopedic Surgeons is a weekly series of questions posed to surgeons around the country about clinical, business and policy issues affecting orthopedic care. We invite all orthopedic surgeon and specialist responses.

Next question: What is the hardest choice orthopedic surgeons have to make?

Dr. Brett Auerbach: ChatGPT and artificial intelligence will have a profound impact on the future of healthcare. Just as calculators did not replace accountants, artificial intelligence will not replace the need for physicians and surgeons. It will become a valuable tool. Expect to see artificial intelligence to expand rapidly in education and research. AI may help physicians become more efficient in charting and documentation. The value of AI will be in helping doctors be better doctors.
