Operation Walk Chicago, a volunteer team of 40 orthopedic surgeons, physicians, nurses, technicians and physical therapists, is traveling to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to perform free joint replacements and provide education for local orthopedic staff, according to a March 24 submitted article published by the Daily Herald.

The team will operate on approximately 40 Vietnamese citizens over the course of a week, mainly performing hip replacements.

Operation Walk Chicago draws volunteers from institutions in the Chicago area, including Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine and Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University Health System. It was founded by Victoria Brander, MD, a surgeon at Northwestern, and David Stulberg, MD, a surgeon at NorthShore.

Since its founding in 2005, Operation Walk Chicago has served patients in seven countries, donating an estimated $500,000 to $1.5 million worth of supplies and services on each trip, the article said.
