Mr. Caufield initially injured his right shoulder in a game on Dec. 23 after falling on it. He then reinjured his shoulder in another game on Jan. 21, the report said.

Dr. Millett specializes in shoulder surgeries and sports medicine. He is a partner of the Steadman Clinic, based in Vail, Colo., and is a consultant for the Major League Baseball Players’ Association and National Hockey League Players’ Association.

Mr. Caufield said in a recent press conference that he could play through the injury but did not want to risk reinjuring the shoulder again, and this is the best decision for his long-term health.
