Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center's orthopedic surgery segment was elevated to departmental status giving it additional support and recognition.

Departmental status puts Albany Medical Center's orthopedics on a level playing field with other programs nationwide, Richard Uhl, MD, interim orthopedic chair said in tan Oct. 26 news release shared with Becker's.

The hospital works with Albany-based Capital Region Orthopaedics – The Bone & Joint Center. The collaboration formed a joint-venture ASC. In 2019, 189,000 outpatient orthopedic visits were registered, and more than 17,000 procedures were done at Albany Medical Center and partner locations.

"[Departmental status] not only allows us to better position ourselves in response to the growing need for orthopedic care in our region, but also to pursue opportunities to educate and lead the way in terms of research and discovery," Alan Boulos, MD, executive vice president and dean of Albany Medical College said in the release.
