Dr. MaCalus Hogan named new UPMC head of orthopedics

MaCalus Hogan, MD, was named the new chair of orthopedics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Hogan succeeds Freddie Fu, MD, who held the position from 1998 to 2021, according to a Sept. 12 university news release. Until his death in 2021, Dr. Fu grew UPMC’s orthopedic department into one of the most diverse programs in the nation, the release said.

“I am honored to take on this leadership role and look forward to taking UPMC and Pitt orthopedics to the next level,” Dr. Hogan said in the release. “There is no other option for excellent care than UPMC. What we offer locally, nationally and globally is unmatched.” 

Dr. Hogan was previously chief of foot and ankle surgery at UPMC, vice chair of education and director of the orthopedic residency program. He has multiple consulting roles for organizationsincluding the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins.
