4 recent orthopedic lawsuits, settlements

Orthopedic

From a patent battle to alleged fraud from fake medical device companies, here are four lawsuits and settlements involving orthopedics since April 10:

1. Renton-based Providence Health & Services Washington agreed to pay $22.7 million to resolve allegations that it defrauded federal healthcare programs with medically unnecessary neurosurgery procedures.

2. Orthopedic devicemaker Arthrex asked a judge to order its insurers to cover a $16 million settlement over kickback allegations. The insurers filed their own lawsuit, alleging Arthrex did not fully inform National Union about what it was settling with the Justice Department.

3. Five fake medical supply businesses, including two that posed as orthopedic companies, allegedly defrauded federal and commercial insurers of more than $48 million over two years. Prosecutors said the companies — Prime Orthopedic Solutions Corp., Ortho-Med Solution, BF Distributors Corp., Timely Medical Services Corp. and Expedited Medical Supplies Corp. — billed insurers for medical equipment they never purchased or provided to patients.

4. Extremity Medical filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona against Fusion Orthopedics concerning patent infringement of an intraosseous fixation platform. Extremity Medical alleged that Fusion Orthopedics released a product similar to its IOFiX platform.
