Surgeon donates $1M to orthopedic, spine hospital

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock received a $1 million gift from alumnus Mark Harriman, MD.

The donation will largely support The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, the university said in a Feb. 16 news release. Dr. Harriman is a recently retired orthopedic surgeon and a 1979 alumnus of UAMS.

"Our gift to UAMS is given to honor the institution that trained me for that internship and a subsequent orthopedic surgery residency," Dr. Harriman said in the release. "In keeping with my specialty, it is an honor to devote 70 percent of our gift to The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital and the remainder to orthopedic research."

The Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital broke ground in 2021 and is expected to be completed in 2023. The project is expected to cost $85 million.
