General orthopedic surgeons earn about $600,000 annually at rural health clinics, according to the 2022 physician compensation report from Physicians Thrive.

Orthopedics is the second highest-paying specialty overall, with a median annual salary of $511,000.

Here's what general orthopedic surgeons make by practice setting:

  • Single specialty: $535,000
  • Multispecialty: $480,000
  • Rural health clinic: $600,000
  • Federally qualified health center: $521,000
  • Academic department: $364,000
