UT Southwestern performs first AR shoulder replacement

Orthopedic

Dallas-based UT Southwestern Medical Center performed the first augmented reality shoulder replacement in Texas, according to a May 27 release.

Orthopedic surgeon Michael Khazzam, MD, performed the procedure, using Wright Medical's Blueprint Mixed Reality technology.

The AR system displays a patient's 3D surgical plan in real time, allowing surgeons to manipulate the images and improve accuracy.

The arthroplasty technique was approved by the FDA in July 2020, and UT Southwestern is one of 15 surgical centers using this technique, according to the release.
