When orthopedists were asked if they felt fairly compensated, 53 percent said no, down from 60 percent in 2020, according to Medscape's Orthopedist Compensation Report.

Oncologists topped the list, with 79 percent responding that they felt fairly compensated.

At the bottom of the list were infectious disease specialists, with just 44 percent reporting that they felt fairly compensated.

This year, Medscape reported that orthopedic surgeons had an average salary of $511,000, second behind plastic surgeons at $526,000. Here's how orthopedic surgeon pay has changed in the last 10 years.

Note: Medscape's Orthopedist Compensation Report collected data from 17,903 physicians between Oct. 6, 2020, and Feb. 11, 2021.
