UCLA names Dr. Rachel Thompson inaugural chair of pediatric orthopedics

Rachel Thompson, MD, has been appointed the William and Patricia Oppenheim Presidential Chair in Pediatric Orthopaedics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California Los Angeles.

The endowed chair honors William Oppenheim, MD, founder of UCLA's pediatric orthopedic program and director emeritus of the Center for Cerebral Palsy at the university's Orthopaedic Institute for Children, and his wife, Patricia Schnegg.

In 2017, Dr. Thompson joined UCLA, where she is director of the Center for Cerebral Palsy. She is also associate director of the orthopedic surgery department’s residency program.

"As a member of the UCLA faculty for many years, I understand how important endowed chairs are to empowering gifted physicians and scientists who have the passion and ability to advance their field," Dr. Oppenheim said in a May 14 news release.

The position was established to help Dr. Thompson "improve treatments and provide the best possible care for pediatric orthopaedic patients and help them have quality of life," he said.
