At Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston, almost half of the inpatients are being treated for complications associated with COVID-19, WBHM reports.

Several specialty services have been disrupted. The hospital's orthopedic unit, as well as its pediatric gynecology and primary medical units, have been turned into COVID units, hospital CEO Louis Bass told the news outlet.

In the last month, the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations nearly doubled in Alabama, surpassing 3,000 inpatients for the first time this week, according to the report.

As of Jan. 6, 80 ICU beds were available, equating to 5 percent of the statewide capacity, signifying a "dangerous and critical window" in the pandemic, Don Williamson, MD, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, told WBHM.
