The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reported more than 53,000 procedures in its 2025 “Shoulder & Elbow Registry” annual report — a 47% increase in submissions compared to last year.

The registry reflects 10 years of data collected from 715 surgeons across 136 facilities in 36 states, according to an Oct. 15 news release.

The report tracks national trends in shoulder arthroplasty, rotator cuff repair and elbow arthroplasty to improve care quality and implant survivorship.

Among 27,461 shoulder arthroplasty procedures, 83.3% of patients had overweight or obesity diagnoses. Rotator cuff repair data showed 42.1% of the 23,267 surgeries included subacromial decompression, with osteoarthritis and hypertension as the leading comorbidities.

The report also expanded its analysis using the patient-reported outcomes measurement information system tool alongside existing assessments. The academy plans to incorporate additional tools in future reports, once minimum thresholds are met.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
