About 14,100 orthopedic surgeons work in the U.S, and the mean annual wage is $373,570, according to the newest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, released May 15.

Here are five things to know:

Note: Pediatric orthopedic surgeons are not included on this list. The bureau’s latest data available is from May 2025.

1. Physician offices have the most orthopedic surgeons followed by outpatient care centers and universities.

2. The mean hourly wage for all orthopedic surgeons is $179.60.

3. The states with the most orthopedic surgeons are New York, Florida, North Carolina, Indiana and Ohio.

4. The states with the highest location quotient for orthopedic surgeons are Arkansas, Maine and Nebraska.

5. The states with the highest annual mean wage for orthopedic surgeons are Missouri ($624,070), Minnesota ($592,220) and Arizona ($542,140).
