Medscape considered various factors to rank the best and worst places for physicians to avoid burnout, in its “Best and Worst Places to Practice 2017.”

Factors included number of lawsuits; punitive medical board; teamwork among physician assistants and nurse practitioners; cultural attractions; crime rates; and divorce rates.

 

Here the top five places for physicians to practice:

 

1. Minnesota
• Recommended city: Minneapolis
• Third happiest and healthiest population

 

2. Wisconsin
• Recommended city: Madison
• Third most livable city

 

3. South Dakota
• Recommended city: Sioux Falls
• High ratings for well-being

 

4. Iowa
• Recommended city: Des Moines
• High physician incomes

 

5. Vermont
• Recommended city: Burlington
• Safest state in the nation

 

These five states ranked lowest:

 

1. Louisiana
• Highest rate of malpractice suits
• Least healthy population

 

2. Arizona
• High malpractice rates
• Many uninsured patients

 

3. Nevada
• Unhealthy population
• Many uninsured patients

 

4. New Mexico
• Many uninsured patients
• Less family friendly
