University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine to open new department of surgery for orthopedic, neurosurgery: 5 insights

Medical students at the University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine will soon have a new department of surgery to build on their patient care and surgical training, according to Northern Nevada Business Weekly.

Here are five insights:

 

1. The new department of surgery will be for third year medical students who are specializing in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, otorhinolaryngology and urology.

 

2. James Harris, MD, senior member of Western Surgical Group, and Lori Rawson, MD, chief of surgery at VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, will co-chair the new department.

 

3. Mitzi Miller, MD, of the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System, and Joe Uccelli, of Renown Health, are set to lead the academic program expansion.

 

4. Karin Klove, MD, will serve as the department of surgery’s selective director.

 

5. UNR Med plans to expand its four-year curriculum for medical students with the new department of surgery. Training will include patient care, pre-operative and post-operative care, operating room assisting and management of patients in acute care.
