Here are five things to know.
1. As more than 10,000 employees plan to strike, UCSF Medical Center is rescheduling surgeries at its Orthopedic Institute and other campuses nearby.
2. The strike is expected to affect five medical centers and 10 campuses throughout the state. Nurses, surgical technicians, security guards and janitors are among the workers protesting.
3. The union of workers American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees announced the strike April 26. The declaration followed a disagreement in contract negotiations.
4. Workers are requesting a 6 percent wage increase annually for the next four years while the university system offered them 3 percent.
5. Senior Vice President and COO of UCSF Health Sheila Antrum said in a letter to the San Francisco Examiner, “We recognize that the next few weeks will be disruptive to our patients, as well as staff and caregivers. We will not compromise on our commitment to providing safe care, even if that means rescheduling treatments and procedures.”
