Lee Memorial Health System in Fort Meyers opened an outpatient surgery center last year to house elective, non-emergency procedures. Among the more frequent procedures are breast surgeries, urological, gastrointestinal and gynecological procedures. According to the report, surgery centers are more cost-effective than the hospital for discretionary surgeries.

At the Outpatient Surgery Center of Lee Memorial Health System, the only professionals who rotate in are the surgeons. The anesthesiologists, surgical techs, pre-op technicians, RNs and administrative personnel remain the same day after day.

According to William Wittenborn, MD, a plastic surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System’s medical staff, patients are appropriate for surgery in the surgery center as long as they are able to recover with a defined time period and without significant post-operative pain control.
