The most common medical staff arrangement of physicians affiliated with U.S. community hospitals in 2010 was “not employed or under contract,” according to “Physician Practices: Background, Organization, and Market Consolidation,” released by Congressional Research Service.

•    Not employed or under contract — 55 percent
•    Group contract — 20 percent
•    Employed — 17 percent
•    Individual contract — 7 percent
