Physicians Generate $1.6T in Economic Activity; 10 Other Findings on Physician Economic Impact

 
The American Medical Association released a report showing physicians generate $1.6 trillion in economic activity.

The report is based on data gathered in 2012 and notes the economic impact physicians have on society. Additional findings from the report include:

 

•    Each physician supports an average of 13.84 jobs
•    Nationwide, physicians support 10 million jobs
•    Each physician supports an average of $1.1 million in total wages and benefits
•    Nationwide, physicians contributed to a total of $775.5 billion in wages and benefits
•    Each physician supported $90,449 in local and state tax revenue
•    Physicians contributed to $65.2 billion in local and state tax revenue nationwide
•    Federal spending on physician services slowed between 2009 and 2012
•    Every dollar applied to physician services supports an additional $1.62 in other business activity
