Physician rating sites not as reliable as you think — here’s why

A study recently published in The Journal of Arthroplasty revealed physician-rating sites fail to incorporate Consensus Core of Orthopaedic Measures, making their reliability questionable.

Here are five things to know:

1. Researchers evaluated the following:

  • Physician-rating sites’ details
  • Differences between physician-rating sites and the Consensus Core
  • Published patient experience across various sites
  • Search rankings among the sites
  • Differences between academic versus non-academic and arthroplasty versus non-arthroplasty surgeons

2. Data pertaining to 506 staff surgeons across 10 academic and non-academic affiliated hospitals yielded 27,792 patient-generated ratings and reviews for 1,404 orthopedists.

3. Composite orthopedic surgeon rating was 4.1 out of 5.

4. No physician-rating site contained all features of the Consensus Core.

5. Surgeons are marketed and promoted better on institution-produced sites, according to the report.
