Patient Portals: A Must for Orthopedic Practices?

As physicians begin to work on achieving Stage 2 Meaningful Use and make their practices more accessible and efficient for patients, they are considering online patient portals as a viable option for their practices, according to an AAOS Now report.

Many patient portals are designed to facilitate efficient and continuous communication between patients and their physicians and physician offices. Physicians can also use patient portals to update referring physicians and other specialists on patient progress.

Basic portals should include the patient’s name, treatment schedule, appointment confirmations, instructions, reminders and the ability to track progress. According to the report, orthopedic groups can save time by linking the portal to the office electronic medical records.

Patients are now looking for online communication with their physicians.

“Our younger patients are digital natives, people accustomed to using technology to communicate,” said Jonathan Schaffer, MD, in the report. “The transition from volume-based to value-based care requires patient communications modalities that respond to the new alignment of care incentives.”
