Here are five thoughts:

1. Although recent studies have indicated less restrictive duty hours pose no harm to patient safety, Dr. Danziger is concerned about the negative impact on personal time.

2. She was pregnant with her first child in her first year of medical school.

3. Less restrictive duty hours may disadvantage women in particular, who are unrepresented in most surgical specialties and more likely to take on the primary parenting role.

4. Dr. Danziger believes residents should not have to choose between pursuing a medical career and having a family. In her experience, Dr. Danziger knows many residents with children, but have spouses who do not work.

5. She argues physicians deserve the right to personal and emotional needs in their lives, and the hours should be restricted.
