The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons conducted an analysis of trends in Medicare reimbursements for orthopedic surgeons, and found a steady drop in rates since the early 1990s, according to an AAOS Now report.

The Medical Group Management Association recently asked 800 group practice professionals to rank seven of the largest health insurers on willingness to participate in payment innovation and professionals' perceptions of the payors.

Here are 20 statistics comparing orthopedic surgeon compensation to other specialists. Despite leading most other specialists in compensation, only 50 percent of orthopedists reported feeling fairly compensated. All statistics are from the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2012.

Physicians in hospitals, medical groups and other provider organizations can expect to see a 2.6 percent increase in salaries next year, according to consulting firm Hay Group's 2012 physician compensation survey.
