New Jersey pulls license of anesthesiologist for alleged opioid overprescription

New Jersey’s Board of Medical Examiners has permanently revoked the medical license of an anesthesiologist who allegedly overprescribed a significant amount of opioids to patients, STL News reports.

What you should know: 

1. Rhode Island resident Pramila Byahatti, MD, operated Park Avenue Pain Management in Warren, N.J.

2. She is accused of prescribing high doses of opioids such as fentanyl and oxycodone to patients without performing required medical or psychological exams. The board alleges she wrote prescriptions for about 45 patients during a 6.5-hour period each week.

3. The alleged opioids prescribed equated to daily morphine milligram equivalents of 202, which is more than four times the CDC’s 50 MME threshold and double the upper limit of 90 MME, according to the report.

4. The former physician’s medical license was temporarily suspended in July.

5. She will pay $50,000 to resolve the allegations and agreed to the permanent revocation of her license, according to a final consent order filed Oct. 13.

6. New Jersey has revoked the licenses of six other physicians for alleged opioid overprescriptions this year.
