The bill would require the Board of Medical Examiners to determine that an applicant for medical licensure does not have a criminal record in any foreign country in which the applicant has resided before issuing or renewing the applicant’s license. Also, under the bill, an applicant, when applying for initial licensure, will have to identify and provide contact information for any employers in the medical or healthcare fields, who the applicant has worked for in the last 10 years.
The state’s Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee approved the legislation.
The bill was introduced in response to the case of Richard Kaul, MD, of Pompton Lakes, N.J., an anesthesiologist who performed spinal procedures, without the proper education or training, according to the report.
