MSOs vs. practice mergers: Which consolidation option is gaining more traction?

So far in 2022 orthopedic practice mergers and management service organization acquisitions are neck and neck in popularity.

Multiple practices have banded with MSOs or other orthopedic groups to strengthen their footing. Here is how they are stacking up this year:

Mergers

The Center for Neurosciences, Orthopaedics & Spine in Dakota Dunes, S.D., and Sioux City, S.D.-based Tri-State Specialists consolidated into a 38-physician practice.

Lincoln (Neb.) Orthopaedic Center and Nebraska Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine, also in Lincoln, have kicked off the new year as a merged entity.

OrthoBethesda (Md.) partnered with Washington Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Washington, D.C., to form a 27-physician group.

Brentwood, Tenn.-based 7 Springs Orthopedics acquired Hendersonville, Tenn.-based Sport Ortho Urgent Care.

 

MSOs

U.S. Orthopaedic Partners acquired Montgomery, Ala.-based Southern Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Kentuckiana Foot & Ankle Sports Medicine in Louisville, Ky., is partnering with practice management group Podiatry Growth Partners.

Spire Orthopedic Partners, a management services organization, added two practices in its first 2022 deal.

Dallas-based Novum Orthopedic Partners formed a new orthopedic management platform, partnering with three practices. 

Management services organization OrthoAlliance inked a partnership with New Albany, Ohio-based JIS Orthopedics.
