Accountability, independence and more: 3 orthopedic leaders weigh in on data analytics

Practice Management

More orthopedic practice leaders are leveraging data analytics with respect to patient care.

Ammar Saymeh, DPM, director of foot and ankle medicine at NJ Spine and Wellness in East Brunswick, said data analytics are an important part of strengthening value-based care.

"Value-based care holds each and every physician accountable for their diagnosis, plan of care and ultimate outcome for their patients on a case-by-case basis," Dr. Saymeh told Becker's. "The cost is more effective than ever for both the patient and the healthcare system as a whole. To improve effectiveness of the value-based care model, it is important for each practice to undergo in-depth data collection and analysis."

Mark Vorherr, CEO of Cincinnati-based Mayfield Brain & Spine, noted the importance of qualitative and quantitative data analysis when it comes to sustaining an independent practice.

"Data become valuable when they are reflected in day-to-day performance," Mr. Vorherr told Becker's. "I believe that both qualitative and quantitative data are equally valuable in sustaining an elite independent medical group. By expanding our reporting and mining of proactive outcomes data, we are positioned to expand our leadership in high-quality patient care."

Alex Bateman, CEO of Atlanta-based Resurgens Orthopaedics, echoed Mr. Vorherr, saying data can help private practices stay relevant.

"We have a tremendous amount of data and information that comes through our practices, and even a group of our size hasn't really invested in a way to turn that information into intelligence that will in turn allow us to treat patients better, manage their health better, and create better economics for the provider and cheaper care," Mr. Bateman told Becker's.
