Where hospitals and health systems are expanding spine, orthopedic services in 2021

A number of health systems have banked on spine and orthopedic care in 2021. Here are 23 hospitals and health systems expanding their services in those areas:

Note: This is not an exhaustive list.

1. Mount Sinai Queens (N.Y.) in January tapped Hilarie Tomasiewicz, MD, PhD, to develop a spine program.

2. Grafton, N.D.-based Unity Medical Center in February opened a $20 million expansion designed to bolster orthopedics, among other specialty services.

3. Watertown, N.Y.-based Samaritan Medical Center opened an orthopedic clinic in February.

4. Aventura (Fla.) Hospital and Medical Center in February opened a 90,000-square-foot tower that houses its Orthopedic & Spine Institute.

5. Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville, N.C., began building a $30 million center to expand its residency program and house its neuroscience institute in February.

6. Centennial (Colo.) Hospital, formerly Centennial Medical Plaza, opened March 1 with a number of new service lines that include orthopedics and spine surgery.

7. Kankakee, Ill.-based Riverside Healthcare in March became the first hospital in the state to offer augmented reality-assisted spine surgery. It also opened its Orthopedic and Spine Center in June.

8. Pittsburgh-based UPMC opened an orthopedic practice near Newport, Pa.

9. Stanford Health Care-ValleyCare said in April that it is repurposing an 80,000-square-foot gym at its Livermore (Calif.) campus into a specialty facility that will provide spine, orthopedic and gastrointestinal care.

10. Covington, La.-based Avala Hospital in April established the Avala Physician Network to meet outpatient needs, including spine and orthopedic care.

11. Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare in April opened a neurosciences services line that has allowed the 11-hospital health system to invest in spine, brain tumor and cerebrovascular care.

12. Norton Healthcare opened a neuroscience and primary care office April 26 designed to bolster spine services in Bardstown, Ky.

13. Yavapai Regional Medical Group's Orthopedic Surgery at Dignity Health is expanding to a new location in Prescott Valley, Ariz.; plans were unveiled in May.

14. A $56 million, three-story tower is planned for Brandon (Fla.) Regional Hospital to meet increasing demand for spine and orthopedic patients; plans were unveiled in May.

15. Phoenix-based HonorHealth on May 20 opened a $44 million neuroscience institute in Scottsdale.

16. Easton-based University of Maryland Shore Regional Health said in May that it had expanded and renovated its orthopedic center in partnership with The Orthopedic Center at Easton.

17. Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Clear Lake opened May 10.

18. Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital opened its $150 million Orthopedic & Spine Tower in August.

19. Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare opened the Norton Neuroscience Institute at Norton Brownsboro Hospital in June.

20. Mercy Health-Springfield in Ohio said in October that it will add spine and neurology services through a series of partnerships and initiatives in 2022.

21. Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine opened a neurosurgery clinic at its Palos Heights, Ill., location in October.

22. NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens expanded its orthopedic department with the opening of a total hip and knee replacement center, the company said Oct. 21.

23. Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health in November opened an orthopedic and neurology center at the Masonicare senior living community in Wallingford, Conn.
