13 orthopedic practice CEO moves — Rothman Orthopaedics, Mayfield Brain & Spine & more

Leadership changes are rife among orthopedic practices, with 13 groups announcing new CEOs in the past 20 months:

2021

1. Michael Boblitz, former CEO of Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Reagan Medical Center, will take over as CEO of Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic Sept. 1. Mr. Boblitz will oversee about 350 employees including 23 physicians.

2. In July, Mark Vorherr left his post as president and COO of Columbus, Ohio-based Mount Carmel Medical Group to become CEO of Cincinnati-based Mayfield Brain & Spine, a 19-surgeon practice.

3. Asheville, N.C.-based EmergeOrtho: Blue Ridge Division named Tommy Middleton as CEO in April. Mr. Middleton has more than 10 years of healthcare administration experience and previously worked at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

4.Christopher Olivia, MD, was named CEO of Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in April, replacing Michael West, who held the role since 1999. Dr. Olivia has been CEO of six health-related companies and has expertise creating value-based financing and ambulatory clinical delivery models. 

5. OrthoBethesda, a 14-surgeon group in Maryland, named Emil Engels, MD, CEO in January. Dr. Engels has more than 20 years of leadership experience, previously serving as president of the northeast market at Mednax, a physician-led medical group in Sunrise, Fla.

6. In January, Joe DiPaolo was named CEO of The Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey. Mr. DiPaolo has served as president of Atlantic Health System's western New Jersey region and CEO of the system's Newton Medical Center in Sussex, N.J. 

7. Morristown, N.J.-based Altair Health, a physician-managed health system focused on spine care, appointed Mark Farrington CEO in January. For the past decade, Mr. Farrington served as CEO of Mayfield Brain & Spine. 

2020

8. Richmond-based OrthoVirginia appointed John Phipps, MD, CEO in July. Dr. Phipps is an endocrinologist with more than 20 years of clinical practice and has held several executive healthcare leadership roles, including president of Charlotte, N.C.-based Novant Health Medical Group. 

9. Alex Bateman was named CEO of Atlanta-based Resurgens Orthopaedics in June, after a tenure at Addison, Texas-based United Surgical Partners International. At USPI, Mr. Bateman oversaw operations for a territory that covers 10 states and 60 surgical centers, and also served as executive director of Resurgens for five years.

10. Dale Ingram left OrthoVirginia to become CEO of Chesterton, Ind.-based Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute in April. Mr. Ingram has 30 years of experience in healthcare practice administration, previously serving as CEO of OrthoVirginia.

11. In May, E.J. Ledesma became CEO of Sarasota, Fla.-based 360 Orthopedics. Mr. Ledesma has 20-plus years of experience in healthcare leadership and management, primarily working at private hospitals.

12. Cody Barnhart in March was appointed CEO of SpineOne Spine and Sport Medical Center in Denver. Prior to the role, Mr. Barnhart served as CEO of St. Luke's Medical Center in Crosby, N.D., and Aspen Mountain Medical Center in Rock Springs, Wyo.

13. In February, Timothy Corvino, MD, was named CEO at Greenwich, Conn.-based Orthopaedic & Neurosurgery Specialists, which partnered with a private equity firm to expand its clinical offerings and ancillary services in 2019.
