Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Frisco (Texas) is reportedly the first hospital in the state to offer augmented reality-assisted spine surgery.

Surgeons at the hospital performed the first surgery with Augmedics' xvision spine system last week.

Xvision features a headset designed to function as if the surgeon has X-ray vision into the patient's anatomy to accurately navigate instruments and implants while looking at the patient instead of a screen.

The device adds "an extra layer of precision" when operating on patients, which can result in less risk of complications and improved outcomes, according to Trevor Castaneda, the hospital's CEO.
