Hospital spine procedures drop 45%, orthopedics down 43% during pandemic

The number of spine surgeries performed at hospitals in the U.S. decreased 45 percent from March 1 to April 15, compared to the same period in 2019, Axios reports.

Knee replacements at hospitals dropped 68 percent, and hip replacements decreased 52 percent for the same six-week period, according to data from hospital software company Strata Decision Technology.

The wider orthopedic field suffered a 43 percent hit.

Ophthalmology has seen the most significant decrease, with procedure volumes dropping 50 percent the same period last year.
