Florida hospitals are preparing to resume elective surgeries May 4 in accordance with Gov. Ron DeSantis' recent guidance.

The governor gave state hospitals the go-ahead to perform elective surgeries provided they retain surge capacity and maintain adequate personal protective equipment in case of a COVID-19 spike.

Healthcare facilities have seen revenues take significant hits due to the cessation of elective surgeries, with Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital seeing revenues dip $16 million in March.

Hospitals are implementing heightened infection prevention policies to protect patients and staff.

Measures being enforced include mandatory mask-wearing for all patients and staff, COVID-19 testing for patients 48 hours prior to surgery and COVID-19 negative-pressure units for patients being treated for the virus.
