5 recent telemedicine developments for spine, orthopedics

Practice Management

Recent studies have indicated that telehealth is growing faster than any other area of care. Telemedicine aims to lower costs and boost efficiency by improving the triage of patients before consultations and eliminating routine follow-up visits.

Here are five recent telemedicine developments in the spine and orthopedic space:

James Chappuis, MD, founder of SpineCenterAtlanta, implemented a telemedicine program at his practice, which he plans to expand to a national level.

Scott Boden, MD, spine surgeon and chair of the department of orthopedics at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, spoke to Becker's Spine Review about opportunities for telemedicine in spine.

Hopkinsville, Ky.-based Jennie Stuart Health expanded access to specialty services through a telehealth imitative with the Nashville, Tenn.-based Vanderbilt Health Affiliated Network.

A telemedicine initiative at the Foot & Ankle Surgical Associates in Thurston, Wash., is enabling seven providers to remotely assess patients, communicate health information and guide patients through orthopedic services.

Owensboro (Ky.) Health received a $460,820 federal grant for a telemedicine initiative that connects patients with physicians in a variety of specialties, including orthopedics.
