Duke receives $24M in federal grants for opioid crisis research — 4 things to know

More than $24 million in federal grants was awarded to researchers from Durham, N.C.-based Duke University, reports WRAL Techwire.

Four things to know:

1. The funds will support researchers in tackling challenges linked to pain and the opioid crisis through the National Institutes of Health's Helping to End Addiction Long-term Initiative.

2. The HEAL Initiative seeks to apply scientific solutions to enhance treatments for chronic pain, decrease opioid use disorder and overdose rates and reach long-term recovery for opioid addiction.

3. The university is expected to receive an additional $12 million in funding over the next five years.

4. One of Duke's research projects aims to improve the efficacy of an implantable spinal cord stimulator that treats chronic neuropathic pain.
