8 hospitals expanding spine, neurosurgery programs

Practice Management

Here are eight hospitals expanding spine and neurosurgery programs.

Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., invested $2 million in a 3 Tesla MRI system for the spine, brain and prostate. The 3 Tesla MRI provides high-quality images, which is crucial in viewing minute areas such as lesions in the brain, small joints and the prostate.

The American College of Surgeons certified Orange Regional Medical Center in Orange County, N.Y., as a Level II adult trauma center. ORMC will provide 24-hour immediate care in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and critical care among other specialties. It is the 12th hospital in New York State to be certified as a Level II adult trauma center.

Amita Health St. Mary's Hospital Kankakee (Ill.) initiated a teleneurology program for speedy care in the event of a head injury, stroke or other neurological issues.  The hospital will have an on-call neurologist who will provide an examination via video connection when a patient with neurology symptoms arrives. The program enables neurological assessments to take place 24 hours a day.

Kenneth Foxx, MD, and Kate Czerniecka-Foxx, MD, brought 24-hour neurosurgery care back to Mercy Fort Smith (Ark.). The hospital was without neurosurgery care since 2016 and turned away roughly 2,200 neurological cases each year. The two physicians completed a six-year residency in neurosurgery at the University of Rochester in Monroe County, N.Y.

Wheeling (W.Va.) Hospital opened two new operating rooms, with one housing a da Vinci Xi surgical robot. The OR featuring the da Vinci Xi robot will perform neurosurgery, orthopedic and robotic surgery among other procedures.

Townsen Memorial Hospital in Humble, Texas, launched an emergency room and two new clinics that will provide spine and neurosurgery services. The new facilities represent a step forward for the hospital, which underwent extensive remodeling after roughly $7 million of damage caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

St. Louis-based Barnes-Jewish Hospital opened its neuro-critical care unit, which features 44 beds. The facility is for patients recovering from neurosurgery or conditions like stroke or epilepsy. It features 24 private ICU rooms. Each patient room features a family zone and portable CT scanners are available on each floor.

Jonathan Workman, DO, is leading a new orthopedic spine program at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, Ill. The Spine Center at GRMC treats a variety of spine conditions including cervical and lumbar pathology, fractures, degeneration, deformity and scoliosis. GRMC also added a bariatric program and aims to add two more programs before the end of the year.
