University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's center for image-guided neurosurgery completed its 16,000th gamma knife treatment.

Three things to know:

1. The gamma knife treats patients with benign or malignant tumors, vascular malformations, pain and other functional brain conditions.

2. The treatment is non-invasive, bloodless and computer-driven. It uses stereotactic radiosurgery to target specific areas and leave the surrounding tissue intact.

3. UPMC features six gamma knifes and acts as a training center for the device.
