Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial Hospital launched the Northwestern Medicine Hispanic Brain and Spine Tumor Program.
Three insights:
1. The program aims to improve access to neurosurgical care for the Hispanic community by eliminating cultural and linguistic barriers.
2. It is directed by Mexico City native Adam Sonabend, MD, who is an assistant professor of neurological surgery at NMH.
3. The team includes: Jean-Paul Wolinsky, MD, a neurosurgeon focusing on spine tumors; Roger Stupp, MD, a neuro-oncologist focusing on brain and spine tumors; and Priya Kumthekar, MD, a neuro-oncologist focusing on brain and spinal cord tumors.
"With this program, patients will be able to pick up the phone to schedule an appointment in Spanish, understand their diagnosis and treatment options, and undergo treatment and surgery including brain mapping for language in the operating room in Spanish," said Dr. Sonabend.
