Philadelphia hospital closes trauma center, prepares for complete shutdown

Practice Management

Philadelphia-based Hahnemahn University Hospital decertified its position as a Level 1 and Level 2 trauma center, reports Philadelphia Business Journal.

Four insights:

1. Nurses at the hospital lack supplies to provide sufficient care according to the Pennsylvania Association of Staff and Nurses and Allied Professionals, which requested that the state hire a manager to safeguard patient safety.

2. Rising financial losses equating to almost $5 million have coerced HUH's owner, American Academic Health System, to close the Center City Medical Center, also in Philadelphia.

3. The emergency department will stay open but will not accept trauma patients, according to Alexander Trebelev, MD, CMO at HUH.

4. The health system revealed that it is preparing to shut down the hospital around Sept. 6.
