Wisconsin hospital adds robotic orthopedic device

Baraboo, Wis.-based SSM Health St. Clare Hospital installed the Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery System for use in knee and hip replacements, reports Baraboo New Republic.

The device is connected to a computer monitoring and sensor system that provides surgeons with real-time feedback in the OR.

"We think [its value] boils down to less soft-tissue damage and blood loss during surgery, and ultimately, a better recovery," said Aaron Carpiaux, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at the hospital.

St. Clare hospital features two orthopedic surgeons and is adding a third this September.
