Long Island, N.Y.-based Central Orthopedic Group, Total Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and Orlin & Cohen have extended their walk-in business to meet the rising demand for immediate or off-hour services, reports Newsday.

Three insights:

1. Last week, Central Orthopedic Group began walk-in services operating after regular business hours at its Massapequa, N.Y., location.

2. Total Orthopedics has five Long Island locations and expanded its Total Ortho Express walk-in service earlier this year with its 20,000-square-foot Syosset, N.Y.-based center.

3. Orlin & Cohen added after-hours, walk-in services at its Merrick, N.Y., location in April, with plans to replicate the service at other locations later this year.

Founder of Total Orthopedics, Charles Ruotolo, MD, said that the "need has been there" and added that 20 percent of the 2,000 patients the group treats each month are walk-ins.
