5 most academically productive orthopedic surgery programs

Practice Management

A study in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons identified the five most academically productive orthopedic surgery programs.

The study authors examined full-time faculty at 138 U.S. orthopedic surgery academic centers, excluding part-time or volunteer faculty. They developed an algorithm based on five metrics of academic achievement:

  • NIH funding as of 2013
  • Number of publications
  • Hirschberg-index, a metric of publication impact
  • Leadership positions held in orthopedic surgery societies
  • Editorial board positions of top orthopedic and subspecialty journals

Here are the five most academically productive programs:

1. Washington University in St. Louis

2. New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery

3. Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic

4. Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania

5. Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University
