Covington, La.-based St. Tammany Parish Hospital added Synaptive Medical's Modus V robotic technology to its neuroscience program.

Four details:

1. Modus V features a robotic arm with a digital microscope that is designed to increase accuracy and precision during minimally invasive complex brain and spine surgery.

2. Working in conjunction with Modus V, Synaptive's BrightMatter technology is designed to help surgeons determine safe surgical routes for tumor removal.

3. BrightMatter technology comprises algorithms that automate processing of the patient's MRI data, helping to determine the best approach to the tumor without damaging critical functions of structures responsible for speech, movement, vision and memory.

4. "Every condition is different, making it imperative for today's surgeons to take a customized, patient-specific approach to surgical planning," said Sebastian Koga, MD, neurosurgery chairman of New Orleans-based Ochsner North Shore Region. "But even the best surgeons in the world are only as good as the technology available to them, which is why we are excited about this investment in BrightMatter technology."
