The United Spinal Association is grieving the loss of President H.W. Bush.

The 41st president was influential in protecting the rights of millions of Americans with disabilities. "The disability community had a great friend and supporter in President George H.W. Bush," said United Spinal Association President and CEO James Weisman. "His support promoted bipartisan efforts to get the Americans with Disability Act passed."

President Bush signed the ADA into law in July 1990. The bill protects the rights of individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities to participate in their communities, compete for jobs, travel easily and gain access to goods and services.

Today, nearly 57 million Americans have a disability covered by the ADA. The United Spinal Association used the ADA to improve mass transit and taxi accessibility while also strengthening employment opportunities for people with disabilities

"The ADA raised the expectations and aspirations of people with disabilities and the awareness of the public about the needs and rights of people with disabilities," Mr. Weisman said. "The President lifted his pen and said, 'let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down.' We are thankful for his vision, courage and moral clarity."
