Mississippi hospital 1st in US to use new spinal technology: 3 insights

Practice Management

Surgeons at Jackson, Miss.-based Henry Ford Allegiance Health are the first in the nation to use the Sentio generation two neuromonitoring system, according to Michigan Live.

Here are three insights:

1. Designed as a minimally invasive technology, the neuromonitoring system decompresses nerves during spine surgeries. Surgeons use accelerometers in the stickers that can detect muscle twitches. The twitches then show up on a screen to show the nerves being activated.

2. Henry Ford Allegiance Health expects to lead studies on the new system. Currently, surgeons must rely on patient feedback to determine if nerves were decompressed during surgery.

3. Johnson & Johnson acquired Sentio and went on to develop the second generation of the neuromonitoring technology.
