OrthoNebraska Hospital targeted in international ransomware attack: 5 things to know

Practice Management

Omaha-based OrthoNebraska Hospital was among the 200 victims in an international ransomware attack and extortion case, according to The Wichita Eagle.

Here are five things to know:

1. A federal grand jury indicted two Iranian men who allegedly created malware known as SamSam Ransomware. The malware encrypted data on OrthoNebraska's computers, and then the two extorted payment from the hospital through bitcoin.

2. Officials estimate the scheme caused victims to lose more than $30 million.

3. Six healthcare-related entities were affected by the ransomware attack, including Wichita-based Kansas Heart Hospital, Los Angeles-based Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and Columbia, Md.-based MedStar Health.

4. The indictment claims the two men received more than $6 million in ransom payments. The two first created the SamSam Ransomware in 2015. A revised version was developed in 2017.

5. Both men would allegedly scan computer networks for vulnerabilities and potential victims. The ransomware would be launched in a network's system before business hours to make it more difficult for the victims to intervene.
