U of Cincinnati neurosurgery department is growing: 6 things to know

University of Cincinnati College of Medicine's neurosurgery department Chairman Joseph Cheng, MD, recruited six neurosurgeons and plans to add more faculty, according to the Cincinnati Business Courier.

Here are six things to know:

1. Dr. Cheng hired:

  • Charles Prestigiacomo, MD
  • Nicholas Marko, MD
  • Juan Torres-Reveron, MD, PhD
  • Jonathan Forbes, MD
  • Rani Nasser, MD
  • Matthew Garrett, MD, PhD

2. The recruited neurosurgeons published a total of 125 papers in the past year, according to Dr. Cheng.

3. The neurosurgery department now employs 11 adult neurosurgeons and five pediatric neurosurgeons.

4. Dr. Cheng has proposed creating four additional faculty positions.

5. Construction is underway on the $60 million UC Gardner Neuroscience Institute, which is expected to open in April 2019. The neuroscience building will feature all UC Health outpatient neurological care and is expected to create 50 new positions.

6. Dr. Cheng requested an $8 million budget increase to keep up with recruiting, which is going faster than expected.
