David Shulkin, MD, is no longer the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Medscape reports.

Here are five things to know.

2. Dr. Shulkin came under fire in February when a VA's inspector general office report revealed he used taxpayer money to pay for his wife's airfare to Europe, CNN reports.

3. After earning his medical degree from Galveston-based University of Texas Medical Branch, Dr. Jackson started his active duty naval service. He later completed his emergency medicine residency at Portsmouth (Va.) Naval Medical Center. Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, he is also a fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

4. While serving in Iraq as an emergency medicine physician in 2006, the White House appointed him to its physician team. Former President Barack Obama appointed him chief physician in 2013.
